Genesis chapter 4 recounts the story of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain, the firstborn, becomes a farmer, while Abel becomes a shepherd. Both offer sacrifices to God: Cain presents some of his crops, while Abel offers the best of his flock. God favors Abel's offering over Cain's, which angers Cain. In a fit of jealousy, Cain lures Abel into a field and kills him. When God questions Cain about Abel's whereabouts, Cain responds defiantly, "Am I my brother's keeper?" God then curses Cain, making him a restless wanderer on the earth. Despite his punishment, God also places a mark on Cain to protect him from being killed. Cain leaves and settles in the land of Nod, where he builds a city and starts a family. The chapter ends with the birth of Seth, another son of Adam and Eve, who carries on the family line after Abel's death.
